NAME: Nona Gaye

IDENTITY: 18-year-old daughter of Marvin Gaye

HOME: Redondo Beach, Calif.

CURRENT ACTIVITY: Promoting her debut album, "Love for the Future" (Third Stone/Atlantic records).

Q. Did your father’s world seem very glamorous to you growing up?

A. It’s been fun being who I am and going to places I’ve always wanted to go to. I think I’ve been meeting celebrities since I was very, very small.

Q. Can you give me some examples?

A. Well, Michael Jackson. When we were in Hawaii, he came to the house. I answered the door. So I freaked out. I think I was about 6.

Q. Is there a particular song by your father that you listen to if you need cheering up?

A. I love all this music. I just like to listen to his voice.

Q. Have you thought about recording one of your father’s songs the way Natalie Cole did "Unforgettable"?

A. I don’t have any reservations about that, but I don’t think I’d like to do that right away. I’d like to try to establish myself as an artist before I go into Dad’s stuff. I don’t want to be accused of riding his coattails.

Q. I understand you are performing tonight in New York. Have you ever sing live? (Ms. Gaye made her debut last Wednesday at a party thrown by Third Stone/Atlantic.)

A. No, this will be my first live performance. Actually, my second, because I did "Regis and Kathie Lee" this morning.

Q. How did you keep from getting too nervous?

A. The only advice I’ve ever heard that somewhat helped me is to envision people naked with black socks on.

Q. Did you envision that?

A. No, not today.

Q. Why not?

A. There weren’t enough people in the audience.

Q. What have you done for fun recently in New York?

A. I went to the Empire State Building a couple of days ago.

Q. That was the most fun thing you’ve done?

A. Yes. It wasn’t like, huge, but I didn’t have time to see the sights. It was closed. I really would like to see the Statue of Liberty before I leave. Are we almost done here?

Q. Why do you ask?

A. Because I have to get ready for tonight.
